2007 ATP-WTA Tour Pacific Life Open - At The Indian Wells Tennis Garden - Day 2

Indian Wells, Sunday – In a shocking turn of events, Guillermo Canas (ARG), ranked #60 on the ATP Tour, stopped Roger Federer (SUI) 7-5, 6-2. Federer, arguably the greatest player ever, struggled with a slight foot injury. Mostly, it was the player across the net that caused the pain.

Canas moved the ball around and returned Federer’s strokes with precision and forced errors from the number one player in the world.

Federer has been the defending champion for 2 years. Canas was able to break his 41 match winning streak. After the match, Federer summarized, “I missed all the opportunities”.

Canas was suspended for 15 months by the ATP Tour for doping. He claims it was a mistake and has come back very motivated to return to the top of the rankings. This surreal victory should boost his confidence. It will most likely help other players to believe that anything is possible.

This is the second time in his career that Canas beat Federer. When asked “How do you beat Roger Federer?”, he responded, “I don’t know. The real thing is I don’t know how I do it. But I think I played good.”

Canas will play Carlos Moya (ESP) on Monday.

Another surprise was Lleyton Hewitt(AUS) losing to Janko Tipsarevic (SRB) 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-2. Hewitt is ranked #20 on the ATP Tour and Tipsarevic is #100.

Maria Sharapova, Rafael Nadal playing doubles, and Daniela Hantukova all advance.
