Coverage of the 2006 JPMorgan Chase Open - Day 5
Carson, CA – It took Jelena Jankovic of Serbia 1 hour and 20 minutes to send Serena Williams packing 6-4, 6-3. Even though William’s ranking has fallen to 110, no one expected Jankovic to completely neutralize her. Jankovic obviously came to the court with a plan and gracefully executed each step of the way. Williams appeared out of shape and out of practice. On the upside for Serena, she filled the stadium. She was the one the crowd came to see. “I definitely feel the support (of the community). It’s awesome to play here.” The Home Depot Center was filled with excited chanting fans. Unfortunately for Serena, it wasn’t enough to carry her to victory.
Serena is hoping to continue her come back. She is going home to Florida to train for the US Open. She seems to have a positive attitude. “I’m going in the right direction”, she said afterwards.
Jankovic (ranked #28 in the world) was clearly beaming over her win. When asked how she was feeling, She said, “I’m really hungry for the game. I’m enjoying my time on the court. I wasn’t scared at all. I know she is a great champion. I was trying to enjoy myself and play every point.”
As for the Sunday Final, Jelena Jankovic will play Elena Dementieva (RUS), “I will try to return well and put pressure on her.” “I will just have rest and prepare for tomorrow” “It would mean a lot to me (to win the title). I would be very happy.”
The JPMorgan Chase Open Finals begins at 2:00 PST at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA.
